All he had were photos
On the couch of a trailer he had been living in for the past three months, Mulder flipped through a photo album he made before he left. His son, his son’s mother; the most important people in his life were thousands of miles away and he couldn’t even tell her where he was.
Photos of Scully
Photos of Scully and William
Photos of all three of them – taken badly but were funny nonetheless and made him smile on nights where he felt so very alone. If so many forces weren’t against them they could be together right now. They could be a family. One day, they would be. One day this would all be over. One day…seemed like it was never going to happen.
Lying down and looking at the flimsy ceiling of the small trailer in the desert Mulder closed his eyes and thought back to happier times. To the creation of his son. Mulder knew when it happened – but didn’t say a word. He couldn’t. He was dying. He couldn’t bear to tell her; dozens of doctors, and no cure. That’s why he went into the light and in the end it saved his life, he was sent back and faced with the sudden realization that he was going to be father. He didn’t handle it well, looking back he was an ass to her, but in the end he was alive, he had a son and an even bigger target on his back because of both.
He closed his eyes and thought back to that night.
He left her alone on the couch, tucked her hair behind her ear, covered her with a blanket and went to his bed, he laid there for hours wide awake before she came in, looking down at him and not saying a word. She unbuttoned her jacket and it fell to the floor, his eyes fixated on her as she pulled the green sweater over her head and let it fall as well. Almost looking as if she was in a trance as she unzipped her skirt, letting it fall the way of the other clothes. She was wearing hose earlier but must have already taken them off, he was grateful because he hated those things. So many times his hand drifted to her leg, to her thigh, wanting to feel skin and instead felt nylon. There she was, by his bed in only a black thong and matching bra. Blinking at him. Mulder sat up in bed and pulled the sheets aside, his own personal way of saying please get in bed with me without begging. She did, and he pulled the sheets over her body, sliding back under and lying on his side as she talked about letting go of pain, of fear and knowing in this instant she had to be with him. Scully was so matter of fact about everything it shouldn’t have surprised him how blunt she was when it came to propositioning him, but he was a man and even as he felt his cock hardening by her words alone he still wished for more seduction on her part. The rest of their clothing was removed in silence and as Mulder positioned himself above her body he watched as tears escaped her eyes. This was his moment, to tell her he loved her, that he had always loved her, and no one would ever mean to him as much as she did. Scully closed her eyes as he entered her, tight but welcoming, he was slow at first as he watched her body tense, felt her legs wrap around him, the heels of her feet pushing into his thighs as her nails dug into his back. She opened her eyes and watched him, watched him make love to her the way he had dreamed of for so many years. And when she came she cried harder – maybe that was the release of pain and fear she was talking about. And when he came…he knew…there was something different about the entire event…there was just a feeling deep inside that on this special night he had given her the one thing she thought she could never have.
She left him that morning
He wondered why, waking up alone was not what he expected and seeing her that next day he didn’t know what to expect. But considering they made love so many more times after he knew she did not regret the choice she made that night and as he walked into that light he hoped she would forgive him for having to leave.
And now
As he lay on the couch in a trailer with the only company being teenage boy, he thought of Scully and William and a life together they would one day share.
But right now all he had were photos.
And hope.
